Opened on the 1st of March 2013 in Umhlanga, Durban, iwantmycoffee is the brainchild of iconic South African musician Ard Matthews of Just Jinjer fame, and his partner, award winning photographer and author, Deborah Good.
After a Just Jinjer performance in Cape Town near the end of 2012, Ard and Deborah had visited Espresso Lab at the Old Biscuit Mill before leaving for the airport, and both had been supremely impressed by the quality, vibe, and coffee culture. “Deb woke up the next morning after we got back to Durban and the first thing she said was ‘I want my coffee!’. It was one of those ‘Eureka’ moments and I knew immediately what she talking about and the concept was born” says Ard. “After spending 8 years in Los Angeles, I had come to miss the amazing LA coffee culture that is so prevalent over there, and I just knew that South Africans would embrace it”
Along with the world class Baristas that were handpicked by the pair, Ard and Deborah also managed to source one of the world’s only naturally occurring de-caffeinated coffees, called the Racemosa bean, meaning that a truly organic de-caf option could be offered that hadn’t been chemically treated or cleaned, another cornerstone of the business that they wanted pay special attention to.
In August 2015, Ard and Deborah handed over the keys to new owner, marketer and public relations specialist Marilyn Garreau. “The IWMC story was built on a dream of two great visionaries and their legacy will always live on… The iwantmycoffee brand remains true to its core values and product offerings and we continue to serve up the most legendary coffees, delicious freezos and decadent hot chocolates in Umhlanga. Our food is simple yet satisfying based on power breakfasts for early birds and the grab and go concept for lunches.”
